A rare sight

Fortunately, the big grey squirrels, who killed most of the red ones in the UK and in Ireland, haven't reached France yet.

Temple Neuf

The Temple Neuf, or new temple, is a protestant lutheran church in the town center. "New" is relative: the former church was destroyed during the franco-prussian war in 1870, rebuilt in 1877. The reconstruction was paid by the Prussians. Before, there was a big dominican convent, since the 13th century.
Apparently, the church is very active

Through the wineyard

Alsace is a wine country, good wines. Mostly white wine, and a rosé, called the rouge d'Ottrott. Rieslings, Sylvaners, Gewurtztraminer, Tokay... Come and get some!

Old photo. If I remember well, it was a fish shop. Or a fishy bar.

Finding the right spot

Always a tough decision, finding the right spot on the beach... Not too far from the water, but close to the beach bar, no bugs, not too crowded... It's a science! As for me, I LOVE desert beaches, where the next neighbor is a vague silhouette at the horizon.

Anyway, click here for more black and white.

14 juillet 2022, fĂȘte nationale

The day a mob stormed an old prison, Bastille Saint Antoine on July 14th, 1789, and liberated... 7 inmates. We celebrate this day since 1790, as it means the end of royalty. Mainly with fireworks. I took the photo from my balcony, 5 km away. Problem: immigrants and asylum seekers were camping in the park where it was supposed to happen. Not a problem for the municipality: send in the police! Hurray, we had our beloved firework! The campers are now back, waiting for their paperwork to come through. Takes years in France...

Lunch

Nice shady place for lunch in town. Shade absolutely needed, yesterday we had 38 degrees C, 100 F. Not better today. Thirsty times. Tip for tourists: in all French restaurants, water is free of charge.

Small female dog weather

Heatwave, starting today. In French, we call it canicule, from the latin canicula, meaning small female dog. Canicula, aka Sirius (from the Greek seirius, fiery),  is the main star of the Canis Major (big dog) constellation, 8 light years away. Since antiquity, the ancients have observed that our sun rises and sets with Canis Major, in July and August, when the weather in France is hottest. Complicated Frenchies? Not really, lol.

Therefore, a man and his dog. In winter.

Transparent

After too many years starring at too strong sunlight, after too many years starring at screens, I thought I needed new glasses. Fact is, I needed urgent eye surgery, cataract as I was going to lose my eyesight, which is not cool for a photographer... First eye 2 weeks ago, second yesterday. This is what I have to wear for 5 nights after each surgery. Oh good: I can read with it, it's transparent!

More b&w here, as usual.

And for  the City Daily Photo monthly theme day (theme: transparent, you guessed it), click here.
