In my opinion the guy is outside because he's going to have a cigarette with his coffee. Had you waited a bit longer perhaps you could have caught the smoke both from his coffee and his cigarette...
Very nice scene. I like his halo. Hope he drinks fast though, there's nothing worse than cold coffee.
