They canceled Christmas

The mayor of Strasbourg, Madame Jeanne Barseghian, in view of the ever worsening pandemic in town, decided to reduce the yearly Christmas market to it's simplest expression: a big tree, lights, and not much else. No chalets, no market, no Vin Chaud... And many businesses going bankrupt.

It should have marked the 450th anniversary, uninterrupted since 1570 AD, even during wars.

1200 years

One more photo from my trip to Molsheim, 20 km away, last summer. Molsheim is a youngish town by european standards, barely 1200 years old.

This is not a painting!

No, they are some flowers and plant, seen last summer in the immediate surroundings.

A Monday Mural

Spotted near the archaeological museum in Herakleion, Crete, Greece. The name of the street, Agiou Titoy, or Saint Tite (or Titus), refers to the saint protector of the town. And the mural is about the minoan civilization.

Kehl am Rhein

Kehl, Germany, just a bridge away from Strasbourg.Often a part of Strasbourg, the city (approx. 36.000 inhabitants), became totally German last in 1953. A shopping town for us strasbourgeois, as many things are cheaper there: food, petrol, tobacco... It's about 17 mn from Strasbourg city centre by tramway.

More about it's chaotic history here.

October theme day: my response to COVID

You live only once... I was supposed to fly to Istanbul in march, on a gastronomical holiday, but my flights were cancelled. So, let's cook Turkish and other foreign food at home! Nevertheless, to fight cabin fever, I travelled when it became possible, Croatia in August, Crete in September, always checking the COVID stats before. Gorgeous food in both countries!

More COVID responses here.

Hopla!

A restaurant in the Petite France area. Hopla is the logo for Fischer beer. I'm not a beer drinker, can't stand it.

Nikos Kazantzakis

Nikos Kazantzakis is, and remains one of my favourite authors. I discovered him in my youth, and he shaped it.

I can't't go to Crete without visiting his tomb.Every time.

I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.

Well, running out of murals, I went to look for them on the island of Crete, Greece. Bingo! There seems to have been a mural "championship" in Herakleion, the island's capital, beautiful ones. Enjoy!

Back in town!

Back in town, after a few days in COVID-free Crete (that's what they say anyway). Had an excellent time, apart of the things stolen from my bag by the ground handling crew at Heraklion airport.

When in Rome...

Well, this is not Rome, this is in Pula, Istria, Croatia. One of the many amphitheatres built by Rome, all around the Med. This one is called the Pula Arena, the 6th largest among the 200  or so surviving amphitheatre. More about it here.
