The former great synagogue of Strasbourg, burned down by the nazis in 1940 and destroyed one year later. Now replaced by a shopping mall. The actual Peace Synagogue was built in 1954, a few km away in the Neustadt.
A stark reminder of rupture and resilience: the great synagogue erased by Nazi violence and replaced by commerce, while the Peace Synagogue in Neustadt stands a few kilometres away as a quieter, enduring testament to survival and renewal.
Many people would like to visit such a synagogue nowadays.
ReplyDeleteIt was a beautiful building.
