Nikos Kazantzakis

Nikos Kazantzakis is, and remains one of my favourite authors. I discovered him in my youth, and he shaped it.

I can't't go to Crete without visiting his tomb.Every time.

I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.

Μια τοιχογραφία τη Δευτέρα

Greek, for: a Monday Mural. Mia toichografía ti Deftéra.

Well, running out of murals, I went to look for them on the island of Crete, Greece. Bingo! There seems to have been a mural "championship" in Herakleion, the island's capital, beautiful ones. Enjoy!

More Monday Murals here.

Back in town!

Back in town, after a few days in COVID-free Crete (that's what they say anyway). Had an excellent time, apart of the things stolen from my bag by the ground handling crew at Heraklion airport.

Well, I'm off for a few days, without computer, to a much hotter place. C ya, around September 17th.

Spiridon, the malacologist

Špiro (or Spiridon) Brusina was a croation malacologist (study of mollusks). His statue in on the seafront, in the old town of Zadar. A little more about him here.
Nice beard by the way!

And another

Specially in COVID times. No no no, I love desert beaches, without umbrellas, without people. Desert.

When in Rome...

Well, this is not Rome, this is in Pula, Istria, Croatia. One of the many amphitheatres built by Rome, all around the Med. This one is called the Pula Arena, the 6th largest among the 200  or so surviving amphitheatre. More about it here.

Monday 24 August 2020

A cat mural

Well, someone loves cats!
Seen on a small street in Zadar, Croatia, last week.

Like walking on water

So, I went to Croatia for a week, Istria and Dalmatia. I didn't actually walk on water, I took planes, coaches, trains and a boat. Kept me (almost) dry, albeit sweaty.

Appropriate

Seen in a shop window. The next heatwave, canicule in french, starts tomorrow. The definition of canicule: at least 3 days in a row, with day temperature over 31C (38, they say, from tomorrow), and 21 C at night. Joy.

A weekend reflection

The barrage Vauban, part of the 17th century fortifications protecting Strasbourg from the evil Prussians. The ugly black building on the side is the hotel du département, an office building.

Benvenuti a Roma!

Welcome to Rome! Well, no. It's actually in the inner courtyard of the Rohan's family palace, in Strasbourg (princes, cardinals, etc). I guess the bust represents one of the Rohans, no name I could see. They sure loved roman style architecture!

Wednesday 22 July 2020

Empty

A new working day ahead, for captain and crew. Still very few tourists.
